Mining operations contribute 4%-7% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and as demand for critical minerals like nickel and cobalt increases, emissions from miners and refiners will rise unless they actively decarbonize. Companies like Vale Indonesia are using hydroelectricity to power their smelters, reducing emissions by over 1.115 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. Other companies and countries are also reducing fossil fuel use in mining operations, with solar and wind power being utilized. However, the transition away from fossil fuels is costly, and investors and consumers play a crucial role in driving companies to adopt cleaner practices.
