California proposes ban on harmful chemicals in popular candies.

California lawmakers are considering a bill that would ban certain "toxic" chemicals found in popular candies such as Skittles and PEZ. The bill would specifically ban foods containing Red Dye No. 3, Titanium Dioxide, Potassium Bromate, Brominated Vegetable Oil or Propyl Paraben, which have been linked to health risks including cancer, behavioral problems in children, harm to reproductive health and damage to the immune system. The bill is supported by the Environmental Working Group but opposed by the American Chemistry Council and the National Confectioners Association, which argues that the ingredients have been approved by the FDA and are safe.
