Fatal Outbreak: Bacterial Infection from Recalled Eye Drops Claims More Lives

Two more Americans have died and 8 have permanently lost their vision after being infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a drug-resistant bacteria linked to recalled eye drops. The bacteria has been detected in 16 states and is believed to be linked to Artificial Tears Lubricant Eye Drops, manufactured by Indian company Global Pharma Healthcare and distributed in the US by EzriCare and Delsam Pharma. The CDC advises patients who have used any of the recalled products and subsequently experience signs or symptoms of an eye infection to seek medical attention immediately. Researchers at the University of California at San Diego have identified a bacteriophage that could work against the bacteria.
