FDA Advisers Approve RSV Vaccine for Pregnant Women to Protect Newborns.

Pfizer's RSV vaccine for pregnant women has been backed by FDA advisers despite some concerns over safety. The vaccine is designed to protect newborns against the respiratory virus by giving women a single injection late in pregnancy. In a study of nearly 7,400 pregnant women, the vaccine was 82% effective at preventing severe RSV during babies’ first three months of life. Pfizer predicts that the US could prevent as many as 20,000 infant hospitalizations a year if enough pregnant women were vaccinated. The FDA is expected to make a decision on approval in August.
