Upcoming Covid Vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax Expected in Mid-September

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expects updated Covid vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax to be available to the public in mid-September, pending approvals from the FDA and CDC. An independent panel of advisors will vote on eligibility guidelines for the vaccines on September 12. The CDC and FDA will encourage Americans to receive the updated Covid shots, as well as other key vaccines, ahead of the fall. The arrival of updated vaccines offers reassurance as the U.S. sees a slight uptick in Covid cases, primarily driven by newer strains like EG.5. The new vaccines are designed to target the omicron subvariant XBB.1.5, but their effectiveness against another new omicron strain, BA.2.86, is still uncertain. However, the vaccines are expected to protect against severe outcomes from catching the Covid virus.
