US Eye Drop Recall Linked to Fourth Death from Bacteria

A fourth person in the US has died from exposure to a drug-resistant bacteria found in a now-recalled type of eye drops. Eighty-one patients in 18 states have been affected by the bacteria after using EzriCare or Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Tears products, which were recalled in February due to the presence of the bacteria of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is resistant to standard antibiotics. The contaminated products, made by the India-based company Pharma Healthcare, have caused at least four deaths, 14 individuals to go blind, and four others to have their eyes surgically removed.
