Florida Doctor's Mistaken Kidney Removal Reveals Multiple Issues

A Florida doctor, Zamip Patel, has been fined $7,236 and required to undergo additional education after mistakenly removing a cyst instead of a kidney during a surgery in 2021. The state Board of Medicine approved the settlement agreement, but the patient was not informed of the mistake for two months. In addition to the fine and education requirement, Patel must give a one-hour speech on wrong-site surgeries and take a five-hour continuing medical education course in risk management. This is the first disciplinary action against Patel's license.
