3M, DuPont, and other manufacturers of "forever chemicals" have won a major victory as a U.S. appeals court overturned a lower court's ruling that would have allowed 11.8 million Ohio residents to sue the companies as a group. The court found that the lead plaintiff had filed too broad a complaint and had not shown a direct link between the chemicals found in his body and the defendants. The lawsuit sought to establish a fund for monitoring health impacts from PFAS exposure and to force the companies to pay for health studies. The chemicals, known as PFAS, are used in various consumer products and have been linked to cancer and other diseases.
