New York City has filed a lawsuit against Hyundai and Kia over a series of car thefts that went viral on TikTok and other social media platforms. The lawsuit claims that the automakers were negligent in failing to include anti-theft devices in their cars, which led to hundreds of car thefts nationwide. The thefts were reportedly easy to pull off because many Hyundai and Kia vehicles lacked electronic immobilizers that prevent thieves from bypassing the ignition. The companies recently agreed to a $200 million settlement stemming from a class action lawsuit brought by people who’ve had their vehicles stolen.
