Kroger Settles Opioid Lawsuits with $1.2 Billion Payment

Kroger, one of the largest supermarket chains in the US, has agreed to pay over $1 billion to settle lawsuits accusing the company of failing to monitor suspicious orders of addictive pain pills that contributed to the opioid crisis. The settlement includes payments to states, local governments, and Native American tribes over 11 years. The funds will be used to address the opioid crisis by supporting addiction treatment services, providing drugs to reverse overdoses, and launching education campaigns. This settlement adds to the more than $50 billion already obtained in settlements from opioid-industry players. Kroger, which operates over 2,200 pharmacies nationwide, did not admit wrongdoing but called the settlement a "milestone" in resolving opioid lawsuits.
