Study Finds Renting More Affordable Than Buying Homes in Bay Area

A new study by real estate company Redfin reveals that in the Bay Area, it is more than twice as expensive to buy a home than to rent, with 0% of homes being cheaper to buy than rent. San Jose tops the list with a typical home being 165% more expensive to purchase than to rent. San Francisco follows with a 139% ownership premium, and Oakland with a 99% ownership premium. Nationally, only four major metropolitan areas offer a cheaper option to buy than rent. Rising mortgage rates and elevated home prices have made homeownership increasingly unaffordable for many, although home prices in the Bay Area have started to decline.
