Beware of "pump switching" scam at Pennsylvania gas stations, warns police department

The Lower Merion Police Department in Pennsylvania is warning residents about a "pump switching" scam at gas stations, where scammers approach customers and offer to help while they fill up. The scammers take hold of the gas pump and continue the transaction after the victim leaves, while also offering to pump gas for other drivers and requesting cash payment. They run up charges on the victim's credit card and pocket the cash before police arrive. The police advise customers to hang up their own gas nozzle or end the transaction on the pump's keypad, and to obtain a receipt as proof of purchase.
