Coalition aims to turn AI data centers into flexible grid assets

Google, Nvidia and 18 other organizations have relaunched the AI Energy Management Alliance to push regulators and utilities to reward data centers that can reliably cut power use during tight grid conditions, with Google pledging up to 1 GW of reducible demand. The coalition, which includes Anthropic, National Grid, AES, Constellation, NRG and RWE, involves 20 organizations and seeks faster connections and fewer upgrades by treating flexible data centers as 'grid-friendly' assets—though success depends on verifiable performance and regulator buy-in amid rising public concern about data centers' electricity use and AI's environmental impact.
