Detroit Leads the Way with North America's First Wireless Charging Road for Electric Vehicles

Detroit has unveiled the first wireless-charging public roadway for electric vehicles (EVs) in the US. A quarter-mile stretch of 14th Street features rubber-coated copper coils buried underneath the road surface, allowing an electric Ford E-Transit van to charge as it moves. The project is part of a public-private partnership led by the Michigan Department of Transportation and Israel's Electreon, aiming to demonstrate the feasibility of inductive-charging infrastructure for EVs. While not a complete solution, the technology could serve as a range extender and potentially reduce the size of EV batteries. The project cost $1.9 million in state funds and $4 million from the partners involved.
