FTC Bans Rite Aid's AI Facial Recognition for Shoplifting Prevention

Rite Aid has been banned from using facial recognition technology for surveillance purposes for five years by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) due to the retailer's failure to implement reasonable safeguards and prevent harm to consumers. The FTC found that Rite Aid's use of facial surveillance systems resulted in false accusations, embarrassment, and harassment of customers, disproportionately impacting people of color. The company will be required to implement comprehensive safeguards and discontinue using the technology if potential risks to consumers cannot be controlled. Rite Aid must also implement a robust information security program and delete any collected biometric information within five years.
