Massive Lithium Reserves Discovered in Nevada Volcano, Potentially World's Largest

Researchers have discovered what may be the largest lithium deposit in the world inside an extinct volcano in Nevada. The deposit, located near the Oregon border, could have a significant impact on America's ability to manufacture batteries without relying on Chinese sources. The volcanic crater is estimated to contain 20 to 40 million tons of lithium metal, surpassing the deposits found in a Bolivian salt flat. The unique claystone composition of the deposit, rich in the mineral illite, contains double the amount of lithium compared to more common magnesium smectite. Mining operations are expected to begin in 2026, potentially providing the US with its own supply of lithium and reducing concerns about supply shortages.
