Facebook's Messenger is upgrading personal conversations to use end-to-end encryption (E2EE) by default, ensuring that only the sender and intended recipients can access the messages. This milestone is the result of a complex process that involved rebuilding various aspects of the application and protocols while maintaining popular features. The aim is to protect people's communications and provide a safe environment for expressing themselves. Facebook has published two technical white papers on E2EE, one describing the cryptographic protocol for message transmission and the other explaining the encrypted storage protocol for messaging history. The company is also testing E2EE for group messaging and plans to expand its work on Instagram over the next year.
