Meta Implements End-to-End Encryption for Messenger and Facebook, Sparking Privacy Debate

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has started implementing end-to-end encryption on Messenger and Facebook, using the Signal protocol and its own Labyrinth protocol. The new features, including message editing, disappearing messages, and control over read receipts, took years to develop and will be rolled out gradually. With end-to-end encryption, Meta will no longer have access to the contents of user messages, except when a message is reported. The move is expected to raise concerns among law enforcement and child protection groups, but Meta aims to balance privacy and safety. Instagram will also receive end-to-end encryption after the Messenger upgrade is completed.
