FAA Implements New High-Speed Flight Routes to Ease East Coast Congestion.

The FAA has activated 169 new, more direct routes along the East Coast, primarily above 18,000 feet in altitude, just in time for the busy summer travel season. The new routes will save passengers time, airlines fuel, and increase safety by reducing complexity and redistributing volume across all available airspace. The legacy routes built when aircraft relied on ground-based radar have been sunsetted, and the new routes will primarily rely on GPS. The FAA worked collaboratively with industry for more than seven years to develop and implement these high-altitude highways in the sky.
