Mary Magdalene in art: sin, devotion, and love across the ages

The Städel Museum in Frankfurt hosts Mary Magdalene: Sin. Pray. Love., a multi-work exhibition tracing how Magdalene has been imagined as a sinner, a saint and a figure of love across centuries and media—from Dürer’s Elevation of Saint Mary Magdalene to contemporary takes like Marlene Dumas and Nieves González—using the so-called “muddle of Marys” to reveal how art has reflected evolving ideas about women, guilt, devotion and agency.
