Background

In late September 2026, Searchlight Pictures acquired the rights to 'Playmates,' a project inspired by Lorraine Nicholson's childhood experiences at the Playboy Mansion. This casting news follows Biel's recent red carpet appearance for 'Matchbox: The Movie,' which debuted on Apple TV on October 9, 2026.

How outlets are covering it

All four sources confirm Biel's casting and the fictional nature of her character. Just Jared and PureWow highlight the contrast between Biel's on-screen role and her real-life marriage to Justin Timberlake, noting recent anniversary posts. Deadline and Variety focus on the production details, noting that the film is Nicholson's feature debut and detailing the production team, including Alex Orlovsky and Duncan Montgomery. While Just Jared emphasizes Biel's excitement via social media, Variety and Deadline provide more technical details on the studio's involvement and the film's logline.

Why it matters

The casting of a major star like Jessica Biel in a project centered on the Playboy Mansion signals a significant shift in how the studio is marketing this coming-of-age drama. It moves the film from a niche indie project to a high-profile studio release, potentially attracting wider audience interest despite the controversial subject matter. The fictional nature of the character helps mitigate potential backlash from Hefner's real-life family.
