John Wilson to Direct Harry Styles MSG Residency Documentary for Universal

Key points

• John Wilson has been filming Harry Styles at Madison Square Garden since August for a new documentary project.
• The film is a hybrid of live performance footage and behind-the-scenes access, focusing on the human stories of the tour.
• Universal Pictures Content Group, Peanut World Pictures, and Harry Styles are producing the project, with Universal holding global rights.
• The documentary is being developed during Styles' record-breaking 'Together, Together' residency at MSG, which runs through late October.
• Distribution plans are still being finalized, but insiders suggest the film may receive a theatrical release through Universal.

Background

This project follows John Wilson's recent success with 'The History of Concrete,' which broke box office records at the IFC Center in September 2026. It also coincides with Harry Styles' expansion of his 'Together, Together' tour into a 25-date stadium run across North America and Europe in 2027.

Why it matters

The collaboration signals a shift in pop music documentation, pairing a major artist with an indie documentary filmmaker known for observational, human-centric storytelling rather than traditional glossy concert films. It also highlights Universal's continued investment in theatrical concert and documentary content, following the success of similar projects like Billie Eilish's 'Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour.'

What to watch

The next steps involve finalizing distribution plans, particularly whether the film will secure a wide theatrical release through Universal. Filming is ongoing as the MSG residency concludes in late October, after which the project will move into post-production.
