Background

Johnny Depp's return to major studio projects has been a significant topic since his 2022 defamation trial. In August 2026, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed Depp was in talks to reprise Jack Sparrow in 'Pirates of the Caribbean 6.' Additionally, Madelyn Cline has been transitioning from Netflix's 'Outer Banks' to feature films, with 'Day Drinker' and Judd Apatow's 'The Comeback King' marking her first major film roles.

How outlets are covering it

The Hollywood Reporter emphasizes the reunion of Depp and Cruz, noting it is their third collaboration. Variety highlights the 'twisty thriller' aspect and Cruz's return to the studio system after a successful indie year. Deadline focuses on the 'supernatural revenge' angle and Depp's 'ghost story' dialogue, drawing parallels to 'Cape Fear.' All three outlets agree on the March 26, 2027, release date and the significance of Depp's comeback.

Why it matters

The release of the 'Day Drinker' trailer signals a definitive return for Johnny Depp to major studio leading roles, following a period of professional estrangement. It also marks a significant transition for Madelyn Cline from television to film and represents a fourth collaboration between Depp and Cruz, underscoring their enduring industry partnership.
