Mattel has released a Barbie with Down syndrome as part of its Fashionistas line, created in partnership with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS). The doll includes a single line in the palm, a shorter frame, longer torso, low muscle tone, and a new face sculpt. The NDSS provided input on the doll's design and messaging, including accessories such as a necklace with three chevrons representing the three copies of chromosome 21 that cause Down syndrome and leg braces. The Barbie is already sold out online, and parents of children with Down syndrome hope to see more dolls with different skin tones.
