Reading: A Powerful Tool to Combat Poverty's Impact on Brain Development

Poverty can negatively impact brain development in early childhood, leading to lower educational attainment and cognitive difficulties. However, a study suggests that reading for pleasure in early childhood can counteract some of these negative effects. Reading for pleasure is associated with better cognition, mental health, and educational attainment in adolescence, regardless of socioeconomic status. It also leads to larger cortical surface areas in brain regions related to cognition and mental health. While reading alone cannot fully address the challenges of poverty on brain development, it provides a simple and low-cost method to improve children's development and outcomes.
