Researchers at Washington State University have discovered that cannabis activates specific neurons in the hypothalamus, promoting appetite in mice. Using calcium imaging technology, they found that cannabis activated cells in the hypothalamus when the mice anticipated and consumed palatable food. The study also revealed that the cannabinoid-1 receptor controlled the activity of "feeding" cells in the hypothalamus, and when these neurons were turned off, cannabis no longer promoted appetite. This research could lead to refined therapeutics for appetite disorders faced by cancer patients, anorexia, and potentially obesity.
