27-year-old Iowa woman discovers high risk of dementia

A 27-year-old Iowa woman has been told she has a 95% chance of developing frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a rare form of dementia that strikes early and alters the victim's personality. Alyssa Nash discovered she carries a gene mutation that will almost certainly sentence her to the same fate as her father, who was diagnosed with FTD in his 30s. FTD is often misdiagnosed as schizophrenia and causes apathy, social withdrawal, a lack of empathy, inappropriate behavior in public, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, poor judgment, and impulsivity. Nash is using this information to enjoy her life to the fullest and is urging others to seek genetic testing.
