"Breakthrough Drug Aurlumyn Offers Hope for Frostbite Amputation Prevention"

The FDA has approved the first medication for treating severe frostbite in adults, a condition that can lead to amputations. The injectable drug, Aurlumyn, made by Eicos Sciences, contains iloprost, a vasodilator that opens blood vessels and prevents clotting. Severe frostbite, caused by exposure to freezing temperatures, can lead to disabled patients and disproportionately affects the homeless population. In a clinical trial, none of the patients who received only the new drug required amputations, compared to those who received other medications. Aurlumyn is expected to be available this spring, with the price yet to be determined.
