The FDA has approved Aurlumyn, the first drug designed to prevent limb amputation from severe frostbite. The drug, developed by Eicos Sciences, showed significant reduction in the risk of amputation in a clinical trial compared to standard care. Aurlumyn, an intravenous drug containing iloprost, is intended to open up blood vessels and prevent clots that can cause permanent damage. While severe frostbite is rare, the drug will benefit groups regularly exposed to extreme cold, such as mountain climbers, military personnel, and homeless populations.
