Improved Disease Detection in Children through Whole Genome Testing: Study

A recent study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association found that whole genome testing, which examines a person's full genetic details, is more effective in identifying genetic abnormalities that can cause diseases in children compared to narrowly targeted tests. The study found that whole genome testing detected 49% of abnormalities, compared to 27% with targeted tests. While whole genome testing has the potential to revolutionize clinical practice for babies with rare conditions, challenges such as varying lab interpretations and higher costs need to be addressed.
