"Link Found Between Slow Walking and Dementia in Humans and Dogs"

A study conducted by North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine found a correlation between slow walking speed and cognitive decline in senior dogs. The researchers measured gait speed in adult and senior dogs and found that dogs in the last 25% of their expected lifespan moved more slowly than adult dogs, regardless of size. Senior dogs who walked more slowly also exhibited more severe cognitive decline based on owner-completed questionnaires and cognitive testing. The study suggests that walking speed could be a potential screening test for cognitive decline in aging dogs.
