Michigan Poll Finds Gap Between Brain Health Beliefs and Daily Habits

A Michigan poll of adults 50+ shows strong belief that brain health matters, but only 47% know that everyday lifestyle changes can lower dementia risk, and fewer than half regularly practice protective habits such as 7+ hours of sleep (54%), daily physical activity (36%), healthy diet (40%), and mentally stimulating activities (48%). Michigan lags the national average in viewing lifestyle as key to brain health (70% vs 76%), and just 23% have discussed brain health with a healthcare provider. With 11% of 65+ living with Alzheimer’s or related dementias and substantial unpaid caregiving, the report calls for stronger public education and routine clinician conversations, while cautioning against unproven supplements and emphasizing proven lifestyle factors."
