Nobel Prize-winning virologist Harald zur Hausen dies at 87.

Harald zur Hausen, a German virologist who won a Nobel Prize for his work on the human papillomavirus (HPV) and its link to cervical cancer, has died at the age of 87. His research led to the development of a highly effective vaccine, but its use remains limited worldwide. Zur Hausen's work also helped launch studies that found HPV links to other cancers in male and female genitalia or passed to other parts of the body through sexual contact. Despite the success of the vaccine, the percentage of girls with at least one dose fell from 20 percent in 2019 to about 15 percent in 2021, according to the World Health Organization.
