Rabies Outbreak: Urgent Vaccination Needed for Pets in Oakland and Gwinnett Counties

A stray kitten found in Oakland County, Michigan, has tested positive for rabies, prompting a warning for pet owners to vaccinate their animals. The 9-month-old kitten initially appeared healthy but later exhibited symptoms such as lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting, and neurologic signs like tremors and biting. The kitten was euthanized. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development emphasizes the importance of vaccinating domestic animals against rabies, as the virus is regularly detected in the state's wildlife, particularly bats and skunks. As of June 28, there have been 14 cases of rabid animals detected in Michigan, including eight bats and five skunks.
