Maryland's Cannabis Industry Grows with Expanded Legal Weed Sales

Cannabis companies in Maryland are ramping up production and expanding their operations in anticipation of the legalization of recreational marijuana use for adults on July 1. The state's medical marijuana industry, which previously served around 162,800 patients, is expected to gain millions of recreational customers. State regulators estimate that the adult-use market could generate up to $600 million in sales in its first year. Maryland's proximity to neighboring states without legal recreational consumption, such as Pennsylvania and Virginia, is also expected to attract out-of-state customers. Existing cannabis businesses have an advantage in establishing brand loyalty and securing prime commercial real estate, while efforts are being made to address racial disparities in the industry.
