Austin Officer Chris Taylor Sentenced to 2 Years for Fatal Shooting

Austin police officer Christopher Taylor was sentenced to two years in prison for the 2019 shooting of Mauris DeSilva, marking the first conviction of an officer for an on-duty fatal shooting in Travis County. DeSilva, experiencing a mental health crisis and holding a knife, was shot by Taylor after failing to comply with police orders. The conviction fulfills District Attorney José Garza's promise of police accountability. Taylor's trial for a separate 2020 shooting ended in a deadlock, and he will not be retried for that case.
