Diver’s Air Cut Off During Lobster Mini Season Triggers Attempted Murder Charge

Michael Simpson, 51, of Miami Beach, is charged with attempted second-degree murder after turning off a diver’s air supply during lobster mini season about a half-mile east of Fisher Island. The incident began as a dispute over a diving spot; the 18-year-old diver, Hunter Cofer, was underwater when Simpson allegedly cut the air, prompting rescue by the boat owner. Cofer was brought to the surface and appeared disoriented but unharmed. Simpson fled but later surrendered to authorities; his bond is $10,000. His attorney denies the accusation, claiming Simpson never touched the tank, and says he will plead not guilty. Cofer is studying to become a paramedic and has not returned to the water since the incident.
