Soldiers and medic intervene to stop mother from stabbing daughters after I-5 crash
Janieka Ellington, 35, faces four counts of attempted first-degree murder after allegedly crashing her SUV on southbound Interstate 5 near DuPont, Washington, on Monday morning. Investigators state she intentionally struck a concrete barrier, causing the vehicle to roll over. After exiting the vehicle, Ellington allegedly retrieved a knife and attacked her two daughters, ages 9 and 15. Bystanders, including two soldiers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord and a National Guard combat medic, intervened to disarm Ellington and restrain her until law enforcement arrived. Both girls were hospitalized; the 9-year-old suffered broken bones and a stab wound, while the 15-year-old sustained minor injuries. Ellington is being held without bail pending a mental health evaluation, with a competency hearing scheduled for October 20.
