Fake Marine and Cancer Fraudster Sentenced to Nearly 6 Years in Prison.

Sarah Cavanaugh, a licensed social worker at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Providence, has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison for fraudulently claiming to be a decorated Marine veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and faking cancer. She used records obtained through her job to support her false claims and received over $250,000 in donations from charities, friends, and donors on GoFundMe. Cavanaugh's scheme began to unravel when a nonprofit organization started looking into whether she actually served in the Marines, and contacted the VA. She will also have to pay restitution to her victims.
