Gabby Petito's parents have received a "burn after reading" letter from Brian Laundrie's mother, which references burying a body and was found in Laundrie's backpack after his remains were discovered. The letter is being argued over in court as to whether it is relevant to the lawsuit brought by Petito's parents against Laundrie's parents and their former attorney. The lawsuit alleges intentional infliction of emotional distress by the Laundries during the time Gabby was missing. Gabby Petito's remains were found in Wyoming in September 2021, and her death was ruled a homicide by manual strangulation. Brian Laundrie wrote in a notebook before taking his own life that he was responsible for her death.
