Man pleads not guilty to human smuggling charges at U.S.-Canada border.

A Florida man, Steve Anthony Shand, has pleaded not guilty to federal human smuggling charges after being arrested near the U.S.-Canada border with two migrants in a rented passenger van. Shand has not been charged in connection with the deaths of four migrants or the discovery of several other migrants in the area. The migrants, believed to be from western India, had become separated from a larger group crossing the border amid blizzard-like conditions and freezing temperatures. Shand, a naturalized citizen from Jamaica, rented the van from an agency at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport two days before his arrest.
