An independent medical review commissioned by attorneys has determined that the death of Lashawn Thompson, who died in a Georgia county jail last year, was a homicide caused by severe neglect to his mental and physical health. Thompson, who had untreated schizophrenia, died of dehydration, malnutrition, and severe body insect infestation, including lice and bed bugs. The review showed a lack of medication in Thompson’s bloodstream, indicating his “severe mental illness” was not being medically treated at the time of his death. Thompson’s family and attorneys have demanded a criminal investigation into his death and for the facility to be closed and a new one to be built.
