Publix parking lot death ties Florida crime case to immigration status

An 82-year-old Florida grandmother, Deborah Murphy, was killed when a Venezuelan man driving an SUV backed into her in a Publix parking lot in Panama City Beach. The driver, Carlos Suarez-Contreras, and his front-seat passenger, Luis Sanabria, were in the United States illegally and were issued ICE detainers. Suarez-Contreras pleaded not guilty to driving with a canceled license causing death and is being held without bond ahead of an Aug. 17 arraignment; Sanabria was found to have an expired visa and was released to ICE. Murphy’s family seeks justice, while authorities note pedestrian-safety and immigration-status issues in the case.
