Texas Man Convicted of Shooting Protester Denied New Trial

A judge denied a request for a new trial for Daniel Perry, a White man convicted of fatally shooting Garrett Foster, another White man, at a Black Lives Matter rally in Austin in July 2020. Perry's legal team argued his actions were justified as self-defense, but documents unsealed by a Travis County judge last month showed Perry had a history of making racist comments. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has promised to pardon Perry, but the state Board of Pardons and Paroles must recommend it first. Perry is scheduled to be sentenced next week.
