Texas Sheriff Accused of Corruption and Dysfunction Linked to Mass Shooting

An investigation by the Associated Press has revealed allegations of corruption and dysfunction within the San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office in Texas, led by Sheriff Greg Capers. The investigation found that deputies took nearly four times as long as initially reported to respond to a mass shooting in which five people were killed. The sheriff's office has faced complaints about neglecting basic police work while focusing on asset seizures that often don't hold up in court. The office also failed to arrest the suspected shooter for domestic violence and did not contact federal authorities to check his immigration status. A whistleblower lawsuit was settled for $240,000, and a police consulting firm found evidence of a "fear-based" culture and improper property seizures. The sheriff's office disregarded the recommendation to have the Texas Rangers investigate.
