Utah mom accused of killing husband and writing a children's book about death avoids death penalty

Prosecutors in Utah have decided not to seek the death penalty against Kouri Richins, a mother accused of fatally poisoning her husband and subsequently writing a children's book about coping with grief. Richins allegedly slipped a lethal dose of fentanyl into her husband's cocktail. Prosecutors claim she planned the murder extensively, making financial arrangements and purchasing drugs found in his system after his death. Richins' attorneys argue that no drugs were found at the family home and suggest a witness who sold her the drugs may have had a motive to lie. Richins is also facing a lawsuit seeking over $13 million in damages for alleged financial wrongdoing before and after her husband's death.
