Legal Battles Erupt in Florida Over Pronoun Restrictions in Schools

Three Florida educators have filed a federal lawsuit challenging a new state law that prohibits transgender or nonbinary public K-12 teachers from using their preferred pronouns. The law, which went into effect in July, states that teachers cannot provide students with pronouns that do not correspond to their assigned sex at birth. Violators could face penalties such as revocation or suspension of their teaching certificate. The lawsuit argues that the law violates the Civil Rights Act, the First Amendment, the Fourteenth Amendment's equal protection clause, and federal Title IX law. The plaintiffs are represented by the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Southern Legal Counsel, and law firm Altshuler Berzon. This lawsuit is part of a broader challenge against anti-LGBTQ+ laws in Florida and other Republican-led states.
