Military service academies have increased their enrollment of people of color in recent years, with the share of cadets at West Point and midshipmen at the Naval Academy who identify with a racial or ethnic minority group rising from 20% to 36% and 19% to 37%, respectively. However, the Supreme Court is considering whether to ban race-conscious admissions in cases involving Harvard University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which could impact the military academies' policies. More than 30 retired generals and admirals argue that diversity matters within military leadership, while a group called Veterans for Fairness and Merit argues that there is no rationale for race-conscious admissions at the academies.
