Cape Cod Emerges as Global Hotspot for Growing Great White Shark Population

Around 800 great white sharks have been estimated to have visited Cape Cod waters from 2015 to 2018, according to a population study conducted by scientists from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's School for Marine Science and Technology, and the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries. The study used a mark-recapture survey to estimate the size of the white shark population in the area, with the number of sharks peaking in late summer and early fall. The researchers emphasized the need for reliable abundance estimates to manage and address potential conflicts between sharks and humans as populations recover.
