A new study by the climate analytics firm First Street Foundation projects that by midcentury, climate change will reverse decades of clean air gains in the U.S., leading to increased levels of harmful air pollutants. This will result in more dangerous outdoor conditions for children, with a fivefold increase in days when it's unsafe for them to play outside in the U.S. West since 2000. The study also predicts that millions of households across the country will experience unhealthy air quality, particularly in hot spots like the West Coast, Midwest, and Northeast. The rise in pollutants, including PM2.5 and ozone, is linked to climate change-driven factors such as wildfires and increased heat, posing significant public health risks.
